Healthy Weight Range:

What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that relates your weight to your height. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). While it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition directly, it remains a widely used starting point for assessing whether your weight falls within a typical range for your height.

BMI Categories

Under 18.5 is considered underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the typical healthy range, 25–29.9 is classified as overweight, and 30 or above falls into the obese range, according to World Health Organization guidelines.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular individuals (such as athletes) can register a higher BMI without carrying excess body fat. It's a useful general indicator, but it works best alongside other measures like waist circumference and body composition, and isn't a substitute for advice from a healthcare professional.
