How Much Water Do You Actually Need?

The commonly cited "8 glasses a day" rule is a simplification that doesn't account for individual differences in body size, activity level, or climate. A more evidence-based approach scales water needs to body weight — a widely used clinical guideline is approximately 30–35ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day for a sedentary adult in a temperate climate, adjusted upward for exercise and heat.

How This Calculator Works

The calculator starts with a base recommendation of 33ml per kilogram of body weight — a middle-of-range clinical estimate. It then adds approximately 350–500ml for every 30 minutes of exercise to account for fluid lost through sweat, and applies a climate adjustment of roughly 5-10% for hot or humid conditions where insensible water loss through skin and breathing increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this include water from food and other drinks?

This figure represents total fluid intake, which can come from water, other beverages, and food (fruits and vegetables in particular have high water content). Roughly 20% of daily fluid intake typically comes from food in a normal diet, so the figure shown is a reasonable target for total fluid consumption, not water alone.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes — a condition called hyponatremia (dangerously low blood sodium from excessive water intake) can occur, particularly in endurance athletes who drink large volumes without electrolyte replacement. This is rare in normal daily life but worth being aware of during intense, prolonged exercise.

Are coffee and tea dehydrating?

Despite the old belief that caffeinated drinks cause net fluid loss, current research shows moderate caffeine consumption does not meaningfully dehydrate regular consumers — coffee and tea can be counted toward daily fluid intake for most people.
